How to Avoid Homesickness When Traveling

Travel is exciting. It’s adventurous. It’s something that most of us love. However, it’s also sometimes scary. It can be really easy to get homesick when you’re traveling far from home.
Here are some things that you can do to prevent homesickness while traveling:
- Take a favorite comfortable item with you. For kids, this would be a blanket. For adults, it might be a favorite book or a great pair of jeans.
- Stay in the same hotel. If you travel to the same destinations often then you can make a home away from home by staying at the same hotel. For example, a friend of mine always stays at the Sleep Inn Salt Lake hotel when she visits her family in Utah.
- Eat at your favorite restaurants. If there are chain restaurants that you like then you can find them at your destination. This evokes the feeling of home.
- Talk to someone from home. You can always make a phone call to someone who lives back home to feel a little bit closer to them while you’re on the road.
If you’re still feeling homesick, try to focus on what you like about the trip instead of what you don’t. This shift in focus can change your mood significantly.
