A Kid’s Spin On Things

ilaughing_familylgI think that one of the best things about having children in our lives is that they remind us to look at life in a different way. More often that not, kids put a positive spin on things for us. They bring out the humor and fun in a situation.

I’ve got a specific example in mind as I write this. It happened a few years ago when I was assisting a friend’s mother with making a big transition in her life. A stroke left her partially disabled and she needed to make some major renovations in her home to accommodate for the disability. It was tough on her.

I remember several incidents during which she would break down crying and would want to give up on life. We’d be looking at pride lift chairs or stairlifts and all of sudden she would break down. It wasn’t that she didn’t want these useful items. It was just really hard to adapt to being someone who needed these types of things just to be comfortable in her home.

A few months after everything was installed, she was still having trouble adapting to her new image of herself. We were sitting in her kitchen talking about it when one of her grandkids came bursting through the door. We sent him off to explore the house while we wrapped up our conversation. He immediately saw the stairlift and wanted to know what it was.

My friend’s mom told him that it’s something that old people have to use to get up and down the stairs. She showed him how it worked. He thought it was a great little ride. He turned to us and said, “I can’t wait to get old!” We laughed. And that was when she realized that things weren’t so bad at all.
