A Difficult Situation

My son has been diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency for a few years now, and he’s just recently become really interested in professional sports.  He actually came home yesterday from school and wanted to know if he was taking illegal drugs (he takes human growth hormone).  I asked him why on earth he thought that, and he said that all these professional athletes keep getting in trouble for illegal substances.  I tried to explain to him that they don’t want athletes buying hgh for sale because it can make a player perform better than they would without it, but for young growing boys like himself it’s not only perfectly legal, but it’s going to help him get better, and grow up to be a strong boy that could play professional sports if he wants to.

growing upIt was a really difficult concept to explain to him though, and it was even harder to get that worry out of his eyes.  I think it’s completely irresponsible to the youth of America to refer to performance enhancing drugs as “illegal”; professional sport associations should really watch their words when they’re speaking to the world, because kids are always listening, absorbing, and looking up to athletes.
