Management Levels with Dedicated Server Hosting

When you are choosing a dedicated server hosting provider there are going to be choices to make. The most important choice that you’ll make with this purchase is the level of management that you want from your host provider.

There are four levels of management with dedicated server hosting:

  1. Unmanaged server hosting. This is for businesses that are able to do all of the work themselves including maintenance, software upgrades and patching when problems occur.
  2. Self managed server hosting. This type of hosting is very similar to unmanaged hosting except that the host provider will most likely do some routine server maintenance for you.
  3. Managed server hosting. With this type of hosting the host will do most of the work in terms of maintenance, updates and resolution of problems. However you will be able to do some things yourself if you want to do so.
  4. Fully managed server hosting. This is for people who don’t want to do anything with the server themselves. The host will do it all and you’ll do nothing.

Getting a good grasp of the freedom and responsibility of the different options can help you to choose the right type of dedicated server hosting.

What are the relative benefits to having more control over your hosting? Since they don’t control the content, wouldn’t you just want to be as hands off as humanly possible? It’s like someone offering to detail your car weekly for free. You take them up on it!

I really don’t see how this is the most important part of the hosting question. Surely things like capacity and cost figure higher than the level of management, right? I really don’t care about the management bit.

I don’t really know much about the whole hosting issue, but I have what is believed a fully managed host–I never do anything with the server itself. Honestly I think it’s the easiest thing in the world–I really have nothing of value to add to any discussion about servers, so I stick to the site building!

How popular are self managed hosting systems? I’ve actually never heard of it, except if you own your servers yourself, which is also pretty rare it seems. Is that mostly used by larger companies?

Is this only for dedicated servers? What about servers online that sell you pieces of the servers for a fee, can you get those in different levels of management? I think the idea of lower level management for my website is really interesting.

What other factors do you have to consider when choosing a host? I’ve had colocation servers for a long time, and now I’m looking more for dedicated servers, so I’m looking to switch. Unfortunately I’m a bit out of my depth and could use input!
