Always Read the Fine Print with Insurance

We get insurance for all different types of things but the reason that we get it is always the same - we want to be protected "just in case" something happens. Unfortunately if you fail to read the fine print on your insurance then you may find out that you aren’t protected after all.
Let me tell you a sad story about two dentist friends of mine who got disability insurance. They were involved in a horrible car accident that left them both unable to do their jobs for a period of time. They each found out that they weren’t going to be covered under their disability insurance for different reasons.
The first dentist had thought that he was getting dentist disability insurance but then found out that he had gotten disability insurance for physician. It didn’t cover him as a dentist even though he had assumed it covered all doctors.
The second dentist had gotten the right coverage but he had failed to get own occupation disability insurance. Technically, he could still do a job, he just couldn’t do his job. Because he could theoretically work at a minimum wage job, he wasn’t covered by his insurance.
These are things that they would have realized if they had read the fine print. They just didn’t think that they would ever need to really get into the nitty gritty of their insurance so they didn’t bother. They - and their patients - suffered as a result.
