Local Control

Growing up in Tucson, I thought that city elections were supposed to be partisan just like legislative and Congressional elections.  When I moved to Phoenix, I realized that Tucson’s system was unusual.  When I became less naive about politics, I realized that Tucson’s system was designed to designed to disenfranchise Republicans.  When I went to law school, I learned that Tucson’s system is a vestige of the many techniques that allowed the Democrats in the south to disenfranchise black voters.

The Tucsonians who found the system to be fundamentally unfair put several initiatives on the ballot to make Tucson’s system conform to those of the rest of Arizona cities.  Shockingly, the primarily Democratic voters of Tucson were unwilling to repeal the system that has served them so well for the last 90 years.  Last year the State Legislature forced all city elections to be non-partisan.

The hapless Arizona Daily Star responded with a convoluted series of editorials in which it was in favor of the change, but opposed the fact that the change came from the Legislature.  Lacking any background in politics, the Star writers somehow forgot a fundamental tenet of the civil rights movement–those who benefit from a discriminatory system are unlikely to voluntarily change it.

The story took an interesting twist this week because the Obama Justice Department invalidated a move toward non partisan elections in Kinston NC.

Voters in this small city decided overwhelmingly last year to do away with the party affiliation of candidates in local elections, but the Obama administration recently overruled the electorate and decided that equal rights for black voters cannot be achieved without the Democratic Party.

So the Star originally supported the change that the voters rejected, then objected to the change that the Legislature supported…surely it must support the change that the Justice Department opposes.

We’ll see.

A Kid’s Spin On Things

ilaughing_familylgI think that one of the best things about having children in our lives is that they remind us to look at life in a different way. More often that not, kids put a positive spin on things for us. They bring out the humor and fun in a situation.

I’ve got a specific example in mind as I write this. It happened a few years ago when I was assisting a friend’s mother with making a big transition in her life. A stroke left her partially disabled and she needed to make some major renovations in her home to accommodate for the disability. It was tough on her.

I remember several incidents during which she would break down crying and would want to give up on life. We’d be looking at pride lift chairs or stairlifts and all of sudden she would break down. It wasn’t that she didn’t want these useful items. It was just really hard to adapt to being someone who needed these types of things just to be comfortable in her home.

A few months after everything was installed, she was still having trouble adapting to her new image of herself. We were sitting in her kitchen talking about it when one of her grandkids came bursting through the door. We sent him off to explore the house while we wrapped up our conversation. He immediately saw the stairlift and wanted to know what it was.

My friend’s mom told him that it’s something that old people have to use to get up and down the stairs. She showed him how it worked. He thought it was a great little ride. He turned to us and said, “I can’t wait to get old!” We laughed. And that was when she realized that things weren’t so bad at all.

Finding Something To Do At The Beach

I feel a little silly admitting that I am an uncreative person, but truth be told that is who I am.  That may sound a little judgmental on my part, but let me tell you a little story of something that happened to me recently and you will see why I made that statement.

Recently, my boss came to me and told me that I had to take a vacation.  According to their records, I had not gone on one for over three years and that wasn’t acceptable.  I guess I never really thought about it since I love my job, and work is about the most exciting thing in my life.  I asked if I could pass on the holiday, but I was given a resounding no.

So I went down to the local travel agent to see  what was cheap, and I found myself on a flight to Hawaii.  Now, I had never been there in my life, so you would think that there would be plenty of things to do, right?

Well, leave it to me to have no idea as to what coast activities I could participate in – all I could see was the single beach in front of my hotel.  So, I picked up a beach guide to help me find some things to do.

Thanks to the book I bought, at least I could say I did some things while on vacation.  It is pretty sad that I couldn’t figure things out on my own.

Look for Jobs in Related Fields

jobsAre you having trouble finding a job? The competition is tough out there right now. Hang in there; it’s going to get better. In the meantime, you can boost your chances of finding work by expanding your job search. Start looking in fields that are related to yours but which you haven’t considered applying to before because they aren’t the types of businesses that you are used to working in.

For example, let’s say that you used to work with a document imaging company. You did clerical work for them. You would want to look into finding a clerical job with any type of business that was even remotely related to document imaging. An example would be to look at document management software vendors to see if they need clerical help. You may not know much about the software end of the job but the field is related enough to what you do have experience with that you should be qualified to do the work. Of course, you’re also qualified to do clerical work of a general nature so you could even expand your search further to looking at all different clerical jobs. Broaden your options and the job that you’re looking for will eventually find you.

Common Performance Enhancing Drugs

Steroid RaidMany athletes use performance-enhancing drugs to assist them in their training and competitions. The most common performance-enhancing drugs are:

  • Muscle Builders. These drugs are designed to help increase lean body muscle mass. Common examples are HGH and steroids. Most athletes prefer hgh because the side effects of hgh are fewer than those for steroids.
  • Diuretics. These help to release water out of the body. Athletes use them if they need to lower their weight. Gymnasts and wrestlers are examples of athletes that commonly use these types of drugs.
  • Stimulants. Some athletes use stimulants in order to increase their energy levels so that they can keep training even though they are tired. Caffeine is the most commonly used stimulant.
  • Painkillers. It is very common for athletes to take painkillers. These allow them to keep pushing their bodies even when they have been injured. The risk of doing this is that it can cause further injury and put the athlete out of competition for a long period of time.

Any drug that an athlete uses (whether legal or illegal) which is intended to improve his or her training is considered a performance-enhancing drug. These are just the most common ones of the bunch.
