Not quite what I had in mind

I’ve always wanted to be a teacher and I’ve always loved cooking, but apparently home economics is not quite the same as culinary arts.

I know, when you think of people who get culinary arts degrees, you think of people looking to become chefs, but for me, it was more a case of passing time.  I finished my teaching degree at my hometown school.  My parents wanted me to stick around town until my sister graduated from high school, so I took a job at a local charter school.  Unfortunately, things went downhill and I got laid off.  My parents felt bad when I couldn’t find a job right away, so they offered to pay for me to go back to school.  I chose to do a two-year culinary degree at a culinary institute downtown because I loved cooking.

It wasn’t my dream, but it was a great experience.  To be honest, I don’t think I was actually ready for the real world, so it might have been a blessing in disguise that I got to spend an extra two years hanging out and living with my college friends, working a part-time jobs at restaurants, and, you know, just living that good ol’ college lifestyle.
