Maybe The Jewelry Wasn’t So Ugly After All!

After we my mother in law died we went about going through all of her personal belongings to see what things we wanted to keep and what things we would need to try to sell. Well being that she was from a different generation (or maybe a completely different planet) than us, there were not too many things that we decided to keep. A lot of her things got disposed of at an estate sale. But some things we decided to try to sell ourselves.
One of the things we decided to take care of on our own was her massive collection of jewelry. My wife picked out a few heirlooms to keep, but most of the jewelry was revolting. I know you can get cash for gold, so I took a box of this stuff to a local place that specializes in this sort of thing. I figured I would simply sell scrap gold and we would get some cash.
For the most part that is exactly what I did. But there was a very pleasant surprise with a few of the pieces. I felt like I was on that TV show Antiques Road Show. It turns out that some of this ugly (really, it was ugly to me) jewelry was worth a lot of money and even had historical significance. I’m glad the guy at the shop was honest because I never would have known.
